I don't know how common this is with dogs but my dog, an Entlebucher mountaint dog, has a fairly complex moral system when it comes to food.  Namely, she seems to have an internal rule set on what it is okay for her to take food.

Here's an example of my dog's morality in action.  If my wife brings me a plate of cheese and crackers, she can set it right in front of me and the dog.  I could get up, leave the room and come back without fear that she would take it.  However,...

Last week, as a joke, I posted an image to Facebook of what (I thought) would be an awesome t-shirt design for my birthday today (which also happens to feature an eclipse across much of the US.

Wincustomize member teddybearcholla took it upon herself to make one and send it to me.

In the fifteen years (!!!) I have been a member here I am constantly surprised at what great friendships I have made.

You all are pretty great! (but teddybearcholla is super-great today!)

The Human Eye: A design review

Occasionally I see creationists point to the human eye as a miracle of design, as if this somehow is evidence of divine origin for the human form. Unfortunately, from an engineering perspective, the human eye is seriously suboptimal. It simply isn't tha...

Don Rickles is no more...

He was pretty much an unknown until one night in 1957, when Frank Sinatra walked into a club during his act.

“Make yourself at home Frank. Hit somebody.” said Rickles. Sinatra roared — with laughter.

In 1985, when Sinatra was asked to perform at Ronald Reagan’s second Inaugural Ball, he insisted that Rickles accompany him for a comedy routine. Rickles, naturally, did not spare the president (“Am I going too fast for you, ...

If this dude can do it then so can I. All hail me. I are the king of the U-niverse.
I'm on my way to GDC.  I write this from first class on a 752-200 from Detroit Metro.  25 years ago I lived in poverty. How did I go from having nothing to being one of those 0.1%ers? The usual, hard work, self-discipline, delayed gratification. But there's another element that rarely gets talked about: Being born lucky.

I took a political test and one of the questions struck me, "Some people are born lucky." as a True or False statement.  I remember watching a vide...

An incredible concept...but "four years after they were first proposed, scientists have managed to add a fourth dimension - the movement of time - to a crystal for the first time, giving it the ability to act as a kind of perpetual 'time-keeper'."

The concept is explained in the linked article, as well as here: http://www.sciencealert.com/physicists-just-created-the-world-s-first-time-crystal

"They did this by chaining together a line of ytterbium io...

So happy to see Joeuser is still plugging along.

I've missed you!

I loved blogging here and the community.  There was a time in my life when JU really nourished my mind and spirit with community, current event commentary and flame wars!

Then the world changed.  At least my world did a bit.  Facebook, Twitter. Everything distilled to tweets or posts.  Life is busy.

I co-founded an anti-sex trafficking nonprofi...

I have three events on my calendar that have lasted through many event purges; my wife's birthday, our anniversary, and joining this place.

It is still the most friendly group of internet denizens around.

Thanks!~
